Drought tolerant landscapes

We need to develop a water conservation ethic in San Diego. Landscaping guidelines are reducing the amount of turf and encouraging the use of drought tolerant plants. Designing landscapes that allow for usable turf areas, we reduce the size of these areas and compliment them with water saving plant material. We need to implement plans that include:

Rethinking turf areas, limit the amount based on need
Water less, know the proper amount needed
Control runoff
A California friendly landscape is about the plants. This does not mean using only California natives; there are luscious looking plants from all over the world that require very little water. We can set the example for sustainable and environmentally friendly landscapes by understanding which plants require:

  • Less water
  • Less care
  • Less fertilizer

There are hundreds of California friendly plants to choose from. They thrive in our mild winters and warm dry summers. They’re durable and beautiful without the need of constant watering.
